The IRTC CDROM (Year Two) is a compilation of all entries made to the Internet Raytracing Competition during its second year of operation. As the IRTC is bi-monthly, this covers round #7 (May/June 1997) to round #12 (March/April 1998). There are over 1000 images and source archives available.

In addition to the entire year's worth of stills submissions, the CD also contains the first three rounds of the quarterly animation competition (October 1997-January 1998 through April 1998-July 1998).

If you'd like to browse the contents of this CD online, here's the links to the the six stills rounds, plus the three animation rounds, that are on the CD. (Note that these links are to the IRTC web site - the CD version of these pages is slightly enhanced).

This CDROM is designed to be used with a web browser - the entire CD is indexed via HTML and bears some resemblance to the IRTC website (with enhancements).

Almost all the stills submissions are 800x600 pixel JPEG's, and all have a text file accompanying them giving author's details and an explanation of the image. In some cases, that explanation is quite comprehensive. Additionally, many authors chose to provide the source to their images, in the form of data files for whatever renderer that they used. In most cases, the renderer of choice was POV-Ray v3.02, and thus there is a large collection of POV-Ray scene files on the CD.

The CD also contains the full set of official binaries that were available at the time of release for version 3.1 of the freeware Persistence of Vision raytracer.

As a special bonus, the CD contains two new versions of the winning 'Batteries Not Included' animation from the 'Toys' animation round. The first one is a 800x600 resolution, 20mb long MPEG. The second is a 640x480 resolution, 180mb long AVI of the same animation. (The AVI version needs to be played from a high-performance hard disk drive to achieve smooth motion).

The CD is ISO9660 compatible with long (Joliet) file names. It is a hybrid ISO/HFS disk meaning that Macintosh users can use it (the Mac side of things being pre laid-out for ease of use). On both Windows 95/NT and the Macintosh, if you have a web browser properly installed on your system, the disk will auto- start when it is inserted into your drive, loading the base index.html file into the browser.

Unix users please note the above paragraph: the disk is Joliet, meaning that unless your CD file system understands the Joliet ISO extensions, it will see the disk as ISO9660 with short 8.3 filenames. In addition, to use the CD (even with Joliet), your CD filesystem needs to be able to map the files on the CD to lower-case. With Linux, this is simple (see the check=relaxed option to mount(8) for more details).

The disk, in total, contains over 550 megabytes of data and is well worth the US$29.00 asking price. This CD is being produced to help support the running costs of the POVRAY.ORG and IRTC.ORG websites.
